Meeting Report

As Ashley promised the prophetic understanding he presented was controversial, at least to any committed dispensationalists, or even those with the usual pre-tribulation approaches. However, though some people felt confused by what must have seemed an all-out assault on their literal understandings of prophetic events, and may have even felt misgivings about an approach which seemed at times more like a symbolic approach to prophecy than a literal approach to the Word, most were appreciative of his placing of Israel’s significance front and centre, where it belongs, in the prophetic scheme of the Last Days. His ‘Israelism’ approach reminded me of Dr Arnold Fruchtenbaum’s doctoral thesis on Israelology which placed the doctrine of Israel alongside the doctrine of the Church in Christian studies, though Arnold puts his emphasis firmly in the dispensational camp, which Ashley certainly would not do. Still, in these days of media and many churches playing down Israel’s significance and attacking her unjustly, Ashley’s emphasis is most welcome. I am sure all will take Ashley at his word and read his book deeply to ‘test everything,’ as scripture urges us to do (1 Thess 5:21). An animated Q&A followed the meeting, which was full to overflowing, even after some of us had to leave before we got to the question time. That would be one of, if not the longest meeting we have had, and one of the most informative.
